Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. I always have trouble identifying Fish Crows from American Crows!

    1. I can’t do it visually (there’s something about the primary feathers). But their voices are very different. American Crows have the classic caw-caw. Fish crows are more like egh-egh. It becomes tricky in summer, however, when fledgling American Crows sound somewhat like Fish Crows. This bird, however, was mounting like crazy, lots of gaps in wings, tail, so I thought it was an adult.
