Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

More of That Kestrel

This male was on a familiar kestrel-tree. From 2018. From 2017.
Different tree, but same hunting grounds. This is a gentle slope leading to a corner of the cemetery fenced off from the streets. It’s filled with modest headstones. Trees along the edges provide great perches. This one perched in four different trees while I was watching. A couple of days later, the bird was in the same place, using two other trees.

  1. Nice shots! I saw the American kestral on my balcony in little italy yesterday and it was beautiful. I wasn’t familiar with this bird so I’ve been looking up info and your site came up. I’ve watched mockingbirds being raised on our building for 4 years now so I especially like the interactive pix of the mockingbird and kestral. Thank you!

    1. Keep an eye out for a kestrel nest as we get into the spring. They love old cornices!
