Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Woodcock Season

Scolopax minorAmerican Woodcocks (Scolopax minor) are back in town! This one in Green-Wood was pointed out to us by a fellow birder on Saturday; also, a correspondent had one in her back yard in Park Slope the other day.

If you were following this blog last year at this time, there were some up-close moments with these plump timberdoodles.

As low-flying creatures, Woodcock seem to hit things on their journey through the urban labyrinth. The Wild Bird Fund bird rescue operation on the Upper West Side gets a fair amount of these guys this time of year.

Here’s some general information on window-collisions you may find helpful.

Note: I’ll be alternating local and temperate rain forest goodness in the coming days, since I still have a number of Oregon photos to share.

  1. A brown bat was brought in to WBF last Saturday . I had never seen one . Rita said he had gotten cold when the weather turned chilly suddenly .
It was warm again on Sunday so I’m asuming he was released and on his way .

    1. Whoa, seems late for a bat!?

      1. OK, so not so late perhaps. Friend had one on Halloween over his block in Brooklyn. Yes, yes, a real bat.
