Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Wood Ducks, Heron Fisher

Aix sponsaI found a trio of Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa) in the Dell Water on Saturday. Aix sponsaThese birds nest in tree cavities or nest boxes, rather atypically for our ducks. And they have nested in Brooklyn before.Ardea albaThe Dell Water was busy with three species of warbler, woodpeckers, and jays hooting and hollering in the distance, and incoming Canada Geese making a splash. The nearby Crescent Water had only this Great Egret poised to strike and the sound of a Kingfisher flying away.

  1. Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day, and this post is perfect. The pic of the egret and the description together is a poem, at least for me.

    1. Thank you, I didn’t realize it was PIYPD. Some years ago, I published a poem called Heron Fisher in Hanging Loose (#84), which isn’t available on the internets. It’s quite different, but I resurrected the title for this post.

  2. Great Shots……….
