Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Time bees

hiveIn August of 2010 I found a feral honeybee hive here. In 2011 and 2012, I didn’t notice any activity here at all, although I have to say my checking in was sporadic at best — Green-Wood is a big place and my routes didn’t always go past this tree — but still, I don’t think that original colony made it. But there’s a colony here now.

  1. There is a bee tree right along the trail I run. I don’t think most people even notice it since the entrance is at ground level.

    1. Yes, there are so few bee trackers these days. There was a ground-acess hive in another tree in Green-Wood some years ago, but as the tree was dead, the cemetery took it out. A good reminder that the cemetery is not a woodlands.
