Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

But Wait…

After yesterday’s post, perhaps a midge, or is it a mosquito?
Winter Firefly.
Springtails (snowfleas). The invertebrates are not completely absent.
Thin-legged wolf spider? There can be a lot of these things down there . This was a day of temperatures in the 30s, making for a hardy little arachnid.

Everything is waking up. The menu isn’t large, yet, but bug-eaters won’t starve. Even the Gingko out the window at work is about to explode in bloom. Soon the winter grimace will be gone from the humans. This could be good!
