Mthew, The bark appears to look a lot like the maple in my back yard.; not sure the type of maple. Carpenter ants have occupied this maple for several years. The ants use the crevasses in the bark as their “streets” to and from their entry’s. Incredible to watch.

Hey, Monica. I passed this tree again today. It’s definitely not a maple because it’s alternately branched. The mystery deepens. Going to post some more pictures soon.

Cool about the ants. When I take school groups to show them the nature right around their block, I always look for ants running up and down street trees.

    Perhaps a mulberry?

Now comes spring, and the free is bloomed with masses of white flowers. Looks like a particularly big specimen of Yoshino cherry (Prunus x yedoensis).
