    I always wonder about these when I come upon them in my woods. Is it just due to a regular molt or was there some mayhem involved?

      I think both are possibilities. If it’s just one in perfect shape, probably molt. For mayhem, the encyclopedic Bird Tracks & Signs by Elbroch with Marks says look for damage to the quills and V-shapes (from raptor bills) in the shaft; tips of shafts that are cut are signs of mammals biting through.
