Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. What a little beauty!

  2. Beautiful photo of an exquisite bird. I’ve never seen one of these guys.

    1. Breeding male quite a different look. Look for them in fields and farmlands during breeding season. I only saw my first a few years ago on a trip to Massachusetts. But then there was a male in Prospect Park this spring during migration.

      1. I saw some of the males for the first time late this past spring. But the females look like a totally different bird (not surprisingly, of course) and they are just stunning! Thanks for sharing!

      2. This could be a non-breeding male, though. Once they molt, they seem to look rather alike during the non-breeding season.
