Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Meet the Herons

Butorides virescensMembers of the family of Green Herons (Butorides virescens) in the Lullwater. The youngsters are yammering at each other, one of the parents is on the left. Now, let’s get some more details of one of the streaky-necked juveniles:Butorides virescensButorides virescensButorides virescensA little neck-scratching, a little crest-spreading. Love the eyes, which a human like me reads as “intense.” All the better for seeing fish, frogs, crabs, dragonflies…. Did you know that some members of this species have been known to use lures to attract fish?

  1. Gorgeous photos! I’ll wait patiently for the “lure fisher fish” information.

  2. I am somewhat obsessed by heron fishing tactics. Although not readily accessible, issue 84 of Hanging Loose, which is evidently still in print — http://hangingloosepress.com/poetry_index_w.html — has a poem of mine called Heronfisher.
