Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Alert

Tamias striatusI don’t know about you, but I need a mammal break. Look at those little ears! The Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias striatus) are out and about now that things have warmed up in the Ravine, Lullwater, and Midwood. One of the hundreds of reasons to keep your dogs leashed in those parts of the park where they are supposed to be on-leash ALL the time, like the Ravine, Lullwater, and Midwood.

  1. Yes we spotted our first chipmunk in the garden a few days ago. It’s thanks to these guys that we’re not growing strawberries this year…

  2. Nice photo. Some day, do a post on your camera.

I have chipmunks in my backyard in suburbia — mostly seen under the bird feeder — and at my cabin in the Ozarks — mostly seen under the bird feeder.

    1. Nothing at all fancy. It’s a Canon PowerShot G9. They are selling the G15 now, so mine is about 6 years old. Had to send it in once for repairs to the lens mechanism; it’s still plugging away. Best feature is the macro. I dream of an actual macro lens, though…

Sometimes I’ll post a iPhone picture if I don’t have my camera with me.

  3. How cute! I photographed a pair on March 3rd by the Fallkill Falls in Prospect Park.
