Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. Hi Matthew, you set me off on a search with these latest images. I wasn’t sure if that was a marsh marigold or a lesser celandine. Going by the large number of stamens, it’s marsh marigold. I also checked on the Chionodoxa/Glory-of-the-snows – not its relative, squill/Scilla, because of the cup-like stamens.

    1. Thank you, Elizabeth. I wasn’t sure, either.

      1. Actually, it’s Lesser Celandine. The marigolds and buttercups have 5 petals.

  2. Beautiful!

Ok, so, Glory-of-the-snow, daffodil, marsh marigold, forsythia, and…what’s the lovely white one? I have no idea.

    1. Nor I, Sara. Found it on Reeve Pl., a block from Prospect Park. Something ornamental and exotic, now naturalized into a little corner of a Brooklyn yard. It was covered with these 3.5″ wide blossoms, startling during yesterday’s overcast coolness.

  3. What were the leaves like?

    1. Bush of a plant. Small but rhododendron-rubbery like leaves.

  4. Could it be a camellia? I think some varieties are hardier than others.

    1. I think you might be right.
