Day II of Bald Eagle Visitation

Last Tuesday, I spent almost two hours with a Bald Eagle in Green-Wood. I first saw the huge bird perched above Valley Water.

A bold Blue Jay read the Riot Act. An American Kestrel flew past but did not engage.

But a pair of Red-tailed Hawks did, making some passes as the eagle screamed. (It has long been standard to use Red-tailed Hawk calls in the place of Bald Eagle calls in media because the hawks are considered more impressive vocally. The eagle is a bit of a pipsqueak.)

One of the Red-tails is perched nearby on the left.

The Red-tails definitely looked like a mating pair. They followed the Baldie when it took off. I found the Baldie again at Sylvan Water, which leads us to tomorrow’s post…

    1. Thank you for your great photos and narrative of the eagle sitings!

  2. I remain impressed by the quality of the photos you capture. And I’m really enjoying this eagle series.

    1. Thank you. This was a very cooperative eagle on a tree on a slope, so I could get fairly close without ruffling any feathers.
