Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.
As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Even without the raven a mockingbird will put on a great show. I watched one sing it’s heart out for several minutes atop a building then fly up about ten feet doing flips and turns that would make an Olympic gymnast or diver envious. Then it landed on the same perch and began singing again. It was quite a show and it repeated several times. Definitely an eye-catcher. Those white patches in the wings and tail flashed brilliantly in bright sun and had to be visible for miles.
