Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

The Advanced Guard of Spring

The House Sparrows are staking out their claims.
Right next door, the Starlings are proclaiming their nest sites as well.
Full-throated singing from a House Finch.
A Song Sparrow being a little more subdued but still giving the syrinx a go. And, not pictured, a Northern Cardinal belting it out from the top of a tall tree.

  1. Thanks for these little beauties announcing spring. The skies are cloudy today but blue skies will come soon.

  2. Thanks for the heads up Starlings here all winter with the Bluebirds but no house sparrows seen.
