Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. Lovely photos but I’m still wondering about your goose, or duck, or dinosaur? Details please!

    😊

    1. Canada Goose. Also, dinosaur, more or less…

        Thanks!

And is he/she still your houseguest?

Did you actually witness it being hatched or wake up to an empty shell?

I’m so enthralled by this story!

      2. Note the date of the post. I have a tradition of April 1st natural history… curiosities.

  2. A phoebe has built her nest under the porch roof of my cabin for several years now. Last time I was out, she was chastising me for sitting on the porch. I think she has other plans for it this summer.

    1. Eminent domain? They love human-made structures for nesting.
