Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Butorides virescensThe Green Heron (Butorides virescens) was the only one of these three not hunkered down when I arrived. The bird was grooming itself — could be either male or female — before hunkering down again on the eggs. Hirundo rusticaBarn Swallow (Hirundo rustica). This nest is under the same bridge as a nest last year, which is mostly still extant, but no longer right above all the people passing through.Hylocichla mustelinaWood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina).

Sturnus vulgarisAnd already out of the nest, a juvenile Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), looking not at all like its parent.
