Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Adolescent Pigeons

Columba liviaWe’ve been following the rapid growth of two baby Rock pigeons (Columba livia) under a local bridge. Click here for the first half of the month. The picture above was taken on May 19th. Just a little of the yellowy-fuzz on their heads now. Wings look good and feathered. Won’t be long now….Columba liviaWell, maybe not yet. May 21st. Squab-plump, though, and the wing feathers look fully fledged. Columba liviaMay 23rd. Almost fully grown. But still being fed by their parents. Columba liviaNote how the youngster on the right has the same wing pattern as the parent bird. Columba liviaI’m going to be away for a bit, so I will miss their first flights. We’ll see if they are still hanging around when I get back.
