Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Springish

A Red-tailed Hawk was plucking a white fancy pigeon or maybe it was a peacenik dove; the feathers were drifting towards Grand Army Plaza like errant snowflakes. A small crowd gathered to watch, some aghast.

There was a Hairy Woodpecker resounding away in the Lullwater, ratta-tapping a dead limb for all to hear.

Those bellwethers of spring, the Red-wing Blackbirds, were konkereeing lustily.

Snowdrops hung their heads.

House Sparrows set up house.

A Chipmunk scuttled into the stones of the Vale’s erstwhile pond. You know it’s nice out when the Chipmunks are out.

A late afternoon walk with Kevin and Jeff. That extra hour of sunlight!
