Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Bean Tree

One of those trees with too many names: Pagoda tree, Sophora, Chinese scholartree. Styphnolobium japonicum, a common street tree in the city. A member, you will not be surprised to hear, of the legume family. The small black bean-like seeds will soon be littering the sidewalks.

    1. I’m almost positive that the squirrels do, with a good squirt of lime juice.

  2. Can you eat those beans?

  3. Actually, I already ate one and it tasted a lot like a pea. Are they safe to eat?

    1. I don’t know. I’d definitely research that before you try more/
