Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Spider in the My Tub

Just think of all the animals that surround us, even in the city. Even in our homes. I usually have spiders, and I usually leave them alone. That inch-plus behemoth marching across the floor that one time I did put outside, but otherwise they’re free to do what they will in here. I used a handy folded subway map, which the spider climbed onto, to move this one from my bathtub to the plumbing under the sink. Depending on your screen, you may get a nice effect, that of no borderlines, if you click on the image.

I suspect this is the common house spider, A. tepidariorum, but don’t quote me on that to the arachnophiles in the tepidarium at the thermae.

Don’t forget that you can still bid on my services as a natural history tour guide in Prospect Park as part of a fund-raiser for the The Nation. It’s going to be a rockin’ tour for the lucky winner(s). And just think of the smiles when you gift the damn thing to a beloved this winter festive season…
