Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Shhh…

Is there a color more beautiful than robin’s egg blue?

This is the nest I posted a picture of last week. It was, after all, a brand new nest. So in the park now, you can see young fledged robins, hopping and flying about; you can see nestling robins, all mouth, gaping for food above the rim of nests; and, you can see eggs. Different pairs of birds have different schedules; for instance, robins that stick around through the winter can stake their territory and get started on courting and nest-making early, before migrants arrive. Robins also may have more than one brood a season.

  1. Beautiful beautiful, Matthew. Watched a very sweet fledgling robin yesterday near the Hudson greenway. Still all spotty amidst the emerging red. I always worry about them with so many people & unleashed canines around.
