Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

High Tide

This was high tide at Brooklyn Bridge Park this morning around 9. This is a 3-foot surge; it is forecast to be nearly double that at the next high tide (9:17 p.m at Brooklyn Bridge). But don’t forget the wind, pushing it even further.

The saltmarsh in the right corner is underwater. Salt marshes are made to be inundated, so it should be fine, if clogged with garbage once the water recedes. Only a few of the many dozens of old pilings are visible on the left side, and each has a Double-crested cormorant perched atop it. Cormorants are tough. This newly laid turf on Pier 5? Probably not so tough.
