Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Beach Salts?

Some bumblebees on the beach, presumably licking salts and perhaps other minerals off the seaweeds. I don’t recall ever noticing this before.

The seaweed was tangled with the dead Horseshoe Crab I posted about on Tuesday, so first I thought they were scavenging the corpse. But of course, they’re bees, that is, wasps who gave hunting for meat to hunt for pollen and nectar.
