Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

Male Kestrel snacking on dragonfly.

A female. Both observed from apartment.

Osprey sightings from Plumb Beach.

Red-tailed. If I didn’t see the tail, I’d say this was a juvenile with that chest plumage, but the tail is one-year-old or older red.

Birds, bugs, & galls! I’ll be leading bird, bug, and gall walks in Green-Wood Cemetery in the coming weeks. And then, on October 3rd, I will be presenting a slide show of my adventures with raptors over the years. I’m looking forward to putting this together from all the stories and images I have.

Check out the calendar and register early (where required).
