Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Ladybug

On iNaturalist, this small colorful beetle has only been observed three times in NYC. All the observations have been at Marine Park during the month of June. Two are from years past, this one my contribution this month.

Turns out, there are some similar-looking beetles, but this one seems to be Ursine Spurleg/Brachiacantha ursina. Seemed to be supping on the sap (?).

  1. In case I ever get to see one, am I right that there are 4 spots on each side and 2 in the middle?

    1. I count ten spots all told. I’m still not sure what makes this one an Ursine, since there are several species that are quite similar.
