Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Three Baltimore Oriole Nests

This is the one I watched being built.

I guess this is the builder, because she’s practically right below the nest. This is in the Dell Water, the thickest patch of woods in Green-Wood. I don’t think there are any human-made materials in the nest above.

Whereas this one, pointed out to me by The City Birder, is ornately festooned with cemetery garbage. It’s not very far from the Dell, by the way.

This one has ribbons, rope, maybe raffia, and whatever that red fiber/fabric is.

This third one seems to be mostly natural materials, but look at that garland!

What effects do human-made materials have on nesting?

By the way, I have another Bugging Out in Green-Wood walk tomorrow.

And on the following Saturday, June 6th, I am presenting Beyond the Sting in the Green House. This is a program combining an illustrated lecture on the wasps of Green-Wood followed by a wasp safari. (Note: it’s scheduled for three hours but wont last that long!)
