Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

On the Hair Bun of Justice

A Peregrine on the statue of Justice atop Brooklyn Borough Hall. Ten years ago, I saw a similar perch and have been glancing up there ever since on my infrequent visits to the area. A friend who is also a serious Peregrine tracker captured a similar photo a few weeks ago.

This may be the reason. As I watched, the bird flew into this gap between buildings. (It’s roofed-over two stories up.) This time of year suggests there is a scrape or nest in there. As it happened, a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation employee whose job is to monitor the city’s Peregrine nests was around with a scope at the same time and saw the same thing.

Ten years and even further back, Peregrines nested on the Brooklyn House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue, several blocks from Borough Hall. That building has since been torn down.
