Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

A lot of my Peregrine photos are like this. This one was stooping down on a Red-tailed Hawk perched on an air-conditioner above Court St. across from Borough Hall, which is all Peregrine territory.

Here’s another, high atop a chimney.

So, recently, when I spied this in the distance, I hustled over and clumped through the snow.

Peregrine on the Merlin Tree.

Some scritchin’ ‘n’ scratchin’.

Then, my raptor cup filleth over, the bird turned to what there was of the sun. And I moved to have that light behind me for a change.

  1. what fascinates me most is it’s speed which can reach well over 200mph. I usually see Peregrines mostly in urban areas, I wonder whether they know more about urban life – above scycrapers that tower above other buildings. Their stoop is also fascinating and truly they are “built for speed”

  2. Thank you for your nature posts ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘
