Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Gull Fight in EDC Airspace

A couple of American Herring Gull tangle over the private airspace of the Made in Brooklyn* complex, illustrating kleptoparasitism and its avoidance.

*While photographing ducks out in the bay, your correspondent was recently told photography wasn’t allowed on this NYC Economic Development Corporation property by the rent-a-cop patrolling it. I guess they’ve never heard of social media?

  1. Young gulls usually play-fight to hone hunting skills. But generally, I think that their fights which sometimes include screaming, are driven by competition for food and territorial defence. They usually thrive in cities since they are highly tolerant to urban disturbances. They are also expert food thieves, snatching your snack when you are looking away from it.
