Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Falco sps

Falco columbarius: they love this linden tree. I’ve seen them up here regularly since 2022. In winter, that is.

This is the second sighting of this Falco sparverius pair bonding off Sixth Avenue. Have yet to see mating, and the location of their cornice cavity nest.

  1. I have to google scientific species names. Can you add common english names as well?

I read this every day and greatly appreciate your commentary.

    1. I usually try to use both common and scientific names, but this time wanted this to stress the relatedness of these two little falcon species.
