Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Odds and Ends

There are still spaces on my Saturday Bugging Out tour at Green-Wood, and my Sunday Bugging Out for Kids tour on Sunday. The weather looks good. We’ll definitely see some of the above, Bald-faced Hornets, and the fabulous paper they make for their arboreal nests.

A number of readers/subscribers/viewers very generously helped finance the purchase of my Sony RX10IV camera back in the summer of 2021. Rather distressingly, since “back in the summer of 2021” was not that long ago, that camera is now barely functioning. I’ve worked it hard, for sure, taking thousands of photographs, but now repair, if possible, or replacement looms. If you would like to contribute to that or the general upkeep of this blog, you can contribute here.

What are we going to do about this country? The BBC interviewed a white Georgia woman the other day who said she was right there in the middle, trying to decide between her fiscal conservatism and her concern for women’s bodily autonomy, still unsure whether to vote for the rapist con artist or the Democrat.

Hi Matthew, I wanted to donate to help with your new camera, but I can’t get the donation page to work for a one time donation of above $25. Can you take a look at it? Thanks! Phil Hore

    1. I will take a look. thanks for letting me know.

      1. I just relaunched the page; it seems to be working now, at least in Chrome
