Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Milkweeds

You were probably wondering, during Milkweed Madness earlier this week, where the Monarchs were. Me too. I haven’t spotted any larvae yet. Adult above is slurping up some Butterfly Milkweed/Asclepius tuberosa nectar.

This male was going for Common Milkweed/A. syriaca.

I tend to see more activity on syriaca than tuberosa. Tuberosa is more photogenic, and was recently voted NYC’s favorite wildflower.

Swamp Milkweed/A. incarnata is unusual in the city, but a few plants were mixed in with the plantings in this small swale in Prospect Park.
