The birds in my patch are few and far between this winter. There are very small numbers even of Juncos and White-throated Sparrows, a typical winter’s mob. The strident calls of Blue Jays are rare. When I heard a nuthatch the other day, I realized it was the first in several months.
The numbers of individual birds seems low in our entire area. Part of that might be due to a warm start to winter. The birds whuich usually come here had less incentive to travel. They still had open water and food. That said, after last week’s freeze the variety and numbers in Central Park were much improved on Saturday.
