Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

A Merlin landed. I hauled up the camera to my eye and read the Battery Exhausted sign. Quickly loading the spare, I got off a few pictures and then glanced away. When I looked back up:

This female American Kestrel was up there. No sign of the Merlin. This Kestrel really does rule around the old chapel at Green-Wood.

A little over an hour later, I was some 15 blocks further southwest and saw a tail-bobbing silhouette ahead in the low sun. Passing and turning around to get the sun behind me: a female American Kestrel. The same one? Don’t know. I wish they were banded.
