Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. Excellent roosting place for that very young Heron! Great capture!

Had a GBH try to make it through a Central Park winter over a decade ago. It almost made it, but it’s diet devolved to the occasional rat. All water was frozen, so no fish. The bird was found dead before the spring thaw. Autopsy/necropsy showed it died from rat poison, not starvation. So, if this bird stays here, feed it. That way it won’t eat so many rats.
