Lots of melanin strengthening the plumage in this bird. Probably doing the same for the talons and beak. This is likely one tough cookie to deal with in the bird world.

  2. Not all of us know our birds. What kind is this beauty?

    1. Red-tailed Hawk/Buteo jamaicensis. The “belly band” and red-tail feathers–at least from the other side, help ID this one. The bulge in the chest means the bird recently ate and has food stored in the crop.

  3. Love watching all of the birds that fly into our farm.
