Winter Beetles

January 24; perhaps a half inch long, this rove beetle was scampering around the vertical face of a small bank at the edge of the upper beach. I wonder if it was disrupted from winter sequestration by the erosion.

I have to wonder if these insects emerged because there were some warm days, but were then killed by sub-freezing temperatures when the cold front came in? Do some have the ability to go into a torpor as hummingbirds do when too cold, or is this just bad luck because of screwy weather?
