Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

There’s no mistaking an adult Bald Eagle, even at a distance.

Hell, even unfocused…

This was over Green-Wood. I hear talk of an adult passing over Prospect Park Lake with some regularity. That was the direction this bird was headed.

I was in Prospect Park December 10th, and lookee here: a passing juvenile Bald Eagle. This one was heading south but turned around overhead, mid-Long Meadow, and headed back north.

Moments, six of them, later, I was ten feet from an adult Red-tailed Hawk perched on the edge of the Long Meadow. This town is absolutely filled with raptors!
