Purple Monday

A would-be Purple Martin colony. ‘Tis said that decoys can be helpful in luring the passing birds in to explore the situation. They do nest on the south coast of Staten Island, which is across the bay there, and a little to the left, but have never taken to this offering at the Narrows Botanical Garden, as far as I know.

Imagine going to view a house you are considering for your future home and finding mannequins posed in each room ostensibly doing what you would do there. The one in the kitchen either cookingt or washing dishes might not bother you. Neither would one sleeping in a bedroom, but someone sitting on the toilet or a couple getting frisky in the bed might affect your desire to live there. Mannequins can get creepy and decoys probably share some of the same aspects.

If I were a purple Martin I’d think the apartment building was full and keep on flying.
