Carol Gracie

It recently came to my attention that Carol Gracie, a reader of this blog, died back in October. The three of her books above should be in every northeastern naturalist’s library.

In honor of her contributions to natural history, here are some of the flowers I saw in the Bronx last week, all richly elucidated in great detail in her Spring Wildflowers book.
Yellow Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum)
And here’s an Andrena mining bee working this flower like mad.
Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), with red-orange sap.
Another Andrena.
Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria).The Dutch have gotten bigger since these were named.
