Backyard and Beyond 
I wonder if the nest parasites make their way to the nest during this phase of nest building. Most birds don’t wallow in the grass or take mud baths, but the parasites still find them. Perhaps the egg laden adults drop off the bird to lay eggs in the grass or the mud?
