Some Feather Details

Preening or feather maintenance is incredibly important for a bird, but what I wanted to call your attention to was this:
Wait for it…
Chasing off the geese.
How all the neck feathers bristle.
And then back to calm.

Wonderful! Beautiful bird and a great punchline. Either goose could have easily won any kind of fight with the heron but, to paraphrase an adage, it’s not the bird in the fight. It’s the fight in the bird.

I don’t think herons can ever be calm. I think it’s all an act with them and that they’re constantly enraged about something. They probably need therapy.
