Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

The band of brownish color which stretches from the critter’s face to it’s feet ranges from cinnamon to a golden apricot. It’s a seldom mentioned by observers of these either gray or black squirrels, but actually quite beautiful. We miss this when we judge this species by it’s rapacious and destructive nature. Take a deep breath and look again. It has a beauty you have been missing.
