Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Mammal Monday

Groundhog, Marmota monax.
Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana.
Eastern Gray Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis. This one was whistle-moaning, a sign of raptor-induced anxiety. Another squirrel was huddled on a neighboring tree. I didn’t see the hawk, but sure suspected it was up there somewhere.

And I thought squirrels were just lousy singers. Maybe they did better when singing in a mixed choir of squirrels, beavers and porcupines.
