Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

On The Beach

Ghost Crab and burrows.
Atlantic Sand Crabs
And their predators. Sanderling.
And Least Sandpiper.
Monarchs are already on the move. They hit the roughly east-west shore of Long Island and turn right, west, in their journey southward.
More Sanderlings. Lots of variety this time of year as they transition to winter plumage.
Ruddy Turnstones.

  1. I see monarchs here, too, in Palo Alto, California. I don’t know if they migrate further south or just stay here year round.
