Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

More Birds

Lots of little Golden-crowned Kinglets.

A single Palm Warbler. The first warbler I’ve seen this spring.

And here’s my second. Pine Warbler.

Pair or Ring-necked Ducks.

Competitive nesting.

Not exactly camouflage.

If you’re like me, you probably didn’t feel you got enough Tree Swallow yesterday.

  1. There’s NEVER enough tree (or other) swallows. There are always leftover mosquitoes. But actually, I haven’t been out enough to see the swallows, though I did get to see the mystery martin at Prospect Park yesterday after my four hours of trash picking.

Great pictures, especially the tree swallows.

  2. Are those tree swallows flexing their wing muscles or are they really Art Deco birds?

    1. Has sprung!
