Marsupial Monday

I heard this before I saw it. I thought the sound was sourced by White-throated Sparrows kicking dry, loose leaves out of the way as they foraged. My first glimpse of the light-colored fur had me thinking a feral cat was coming this way.
But no, it was Didelphis virginiana. I think because I was already standing still, eye-balling the nearby Field Sparrows, this Virginia Opossum just carried on foraging for delicious opossum treats. That’s a broad category, “delicious opossum treats,” as they’ll eat almost anything: animal, vegetable, garbage. Big tick-vacuums, too, don’t forget, so let’s hear it for them!

Had one as a house guest in San Diego in the 1970’s. Let her and the pups stay until they were ready to leave. Lots of fleas came with the package, but still feel we did the right thing.
