Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Something Something

More explorations underneath trees, looking up this time.
This Douglas fir is gnarly with what I suppose are cankers. They’re leaking sap. Used to the resiny stickiness of pines, I note that this sap was quite dry.
Anyone know the cause?

  1. I have a large Doug Fir up in Troutake, Wa and it is displaying the same problem. It is getting a good amount of water, and the tree looks healthy, but it has these weird cankers all over it. Tiny ones, marble size up to a baseball. Did you fine anything out about them?
