The local Northern Mockingbirds have been relentless in going after the local American Kestrels. With a hissing sound, they dive and dive. This was yesterday morning. A little later, an alarm-sounding kestrel pulled me to the window and I saw: crow chasing a Red-tailed Hawk over the park, with a Northern Mockingbird going after the hawk and maybe the crow as well.
This weekend, I spotted a Northern Mockingbird harrying a young Common Raven.
You can tell this is a young Raven because of the red mouth. Several minutes later, this one re-joined the raven family, and the five of them flew towards the west. More pictures of this big corvid soon….

Seems the ravens are not welcome here. Two days ago there was a group sitting on the roof of a Manhattan Beach (Brooklyn) mansion in the early morning, making knocking sounds. A naked hairy torso of a man was hanging out the second story window trying to shoo them away with arm waving and yelling. To no effect as they must be used to that kind of reaction. Then all morning there were scenes of mockingbirds solo attacking flying ravens and crows or grackles attacking them in groups. The whole hood was in protest mode until the ravens finally left. I wonder if it’s the same family. They are impressive, vocal birds and attract a lot of attention from everyone.
